Elevator Memories Part 2

This 17 Lex elevator schedule appeared in a student informational booklet from 1952. Thanks to the estate of Donald Talbot (’57).

I loved the photo of Tony Ermilio the elevator man in the Spring/Summer 2013 edition of the alumni magazine.

One of my first memories of my time at Baruch, during the mid-1970s, is of Tony walking into the first day of Freshman Orientation. He came up on stage at 23rd Street [now known as Mason Hall auditorium], grabbed a microphone, and stated his famous line, “Welcome to UCLA, the University on the Corner of Lexington Avenue.” Although I would leave in 1978, just shy of completing my BBA, I returned to finish my degree in 2001. Because of Tony’s famous joke, I tell people I attended UCLA.

About the Writer

Silverstein, currently the regional distribution manager for IAP East/Dura International in Avenel, N.J., has a unique story. As he says, he “entered Baruch College as a Statesman and graduated as a Bearcat.”  As a student in the 1970s, Silverstein juggled a full-time job and a full-time course load. Through an error—he inadvertently dropped Accounting 1103—he left Baruch in 1978 three credits shy of a BBA. Competing with that final course for his attention was a promising professional opportunity, the Executive Training Program at Gimbel’s. Twenty-two years later, with two daughters in college, Silverstein decided to complete his degree. He contacted Baruch and was able to make up the missing class and earn his long-awaited bachelor’s degree, begun 27 years before.
